DVT Medical Negligence Results In £400,000 compensation

A mother is to be awarded £400,000 in compensation for medical negligence from a hospital relating to misdiagnosis of a severe blood clot after giving birth.

The case was brought against the South Eastern Health Trust. The case related to deep vein thrombosis in the leg of the mother after her first child was born at the Ulster Hospital in June 2009.

She had claimed that as a pregnant woman over the age of 35, she was not properly assessed as being at risk.

Mistreatment.com regularly deals with misdiagnosis and delay cases regarding DVT which can sometimes lead to further surgery being required. Our specialist misdiagnosis and delay teams have helped provide compensation to clients who have dealt with negligence after symptoms of deep vein thrombosis which had not been dealt with promptly.

Further alleged negligence occurred in the case in question when the mother went to A&E following the birth with symptoms of deep vein thrombosis.

Mistreatment.com deals with DVT claims where misdiagnosis results in blood clots dislodging and travelling to the lungs; women are more likely to develop blood clots of this type during pregnancy.

The woman was initially old it was nothing more than a hormonal imbalance.

"It's affected every aspect of my life, I just feel old before my time," the mother said after the case was settled and liability was admitted.

"I find walking for more than 10-15 minutes very hard to endure and stairs are incredibly difficult."

She had to undergo further operations following the births of her other two children due to associated issues.

"If it had clotted again I could have lost my leg," she added.

As well as her medication, the woman says she now has to wear tight stockings "the equivalent of a wetsuit".
