Retained Placenta Mismanagement & Errors

During the final stages of labour, the placenta and the membrane which attaches itself around the foetus also requires delivering immediately following the baby’s birth. During some births, the placenta may be left retained in the mothers uterus due to poor delivery techniques and monitoring of contractions.

Types of Retained Placenta Mismanagement & Treatment Errors

Whilst it is the priority of obstetricians, gynaecologist and midwifes to ensure that the placenta is delivered, errors may occur. Such errors may include:

  • A failure to remove the placenta fully due to poor techniques
  • Following placenta removal, failure to ensure the uterus is completely empty following both caesarean and vaginal birth
  • A delay or failure to prescribe the mother oxytocin to produce a contraction
  • A failure to prescribe the mother with antibiotics
  • A delay or failure to acknowledge the mothers concerns regarding symptoms of infection, bleeding and expulsion of retained placenta
  • Delay and failure to carry out an ultrasound scan to diagnose retained placenta
  • And other retained placenta errors

Retained placenta can pose a threat to the mother’s health and lead to both minor and serious complications such as the following:

  • Infection including septicaemia (blood poisoning) due to retained placenta
  • Surgery may be required to remove the retained placenta
  • Internal haemorrhaging (bleeding) known as post-partum haemorrhaging
  • Damage to the genital tract and uterine cavity
  • And other retained placenta injuries

If you or a loved one has been affected by errors in removal of the placenta or treating retained placenta, which has resulted in further complications or surgery, Mistreatment.com may be able to assist.
