Areas of law

I have been working in the field of Clinical Negligence since 2009 and qualified as a solicitor in 2011. I work on a wide range of claims, from complicated cerebral palsy claims to pressure sore cases. I have helped many clients in respect of orthopaedic injuries, ophthalmic problems and delayed diagnosis of cancer.

Summary

Before I qualified as a solicitor I volunteered as an advisor at the Citizens Advice Bureau and enjoyed being able to support people at a very difficult and stressful time in their lives. I then did work experience in law specialising in clinical negligence and realised that this, combined helping people and the intellectual challenge of learning about various aspects of medicine, was what I found the most interesting.

In my experience I have learned that clients need to be able to trust in their legal team and feel confident that they are doing a good job. We work on each case as a team, so there is always somebody available for the client to speak to about their case. The nature of the law we specialise in means that we deal with some very sensitive and often upsetting issues. It is therefore essential that our clients feel they can talk to us openly without being judged and know that we will do our best for them.

Many of our cases have a huge impact upon clients’ lives. It is very rewarding to see somebody obtain the compensation they deserve. A settlement can pay for treatment that they may need or buy a house that they can have adapted to suit their needs.

I also hope that the work we do can improve patient safety in our hospitals, so that the same mistakes are not made again.

I have worked very closely with many families and fought their case to a successful settlement. I represented a husband where, due to a delayed diagnosis of lung cancer, his wife died eight years earlier than she would have done had she received timely treatment. We obtained a letter of apology and over £115,000 in compensation.

One of my clients had incurred permanent nerve damage caused during an elbow operation which affected her ability to work and carry out day-to-day tasks. The case was settled out of court and my client was awarded £90,000 in compensation.
