Mrs A receives £47,500 in compensation after delay in treating appendicitis also leads to bowel damage.

Mrs A receives £47,500 in compensation after delay in treating appendicitis also leads to bowel damage.

Mrs A was referred directly to the surgeons at the Royal Blackburn Hospital by her GP on 29 July 2009.

Her GP believed that she had acute appendicitis. She was admitted, awaiting an ultrasound scan however this was not done and even though she had a high temperature she was sent home again on the evening of 30 July to await the ultrasound as an outpatient. She was in excruciating pain over the weekend and contacted the radiology department to arrange the scan on the Monday morning but the earliest they could offer her was 6 August.

The scan revealed an abscess which had formed as a result of a perforated appendix and she had to undergo an operation to remove the abscess and because of the damage to her bowel, also had a limited bowel resection.

One of our panel member solicitors succeeded in establishing liability against the Trust and the claim settled just over 1 year after they were instructed, for agreed damages of £47,500.
